I think it's just a cute reference to the episode plot and the short story it pulled elements from, and it's fun to pick out.
But I don't know that it necessarily "means" something in terms of a broader mystery or anything on the tie-in websites.
It's also fun to pick up my old "Complete Illustrated Sherlock Holmes" book and re-read stuff that was used in the show, but I'm just a geek that way.
